Design a Room

  • Post category:Speaking

Topic: Housing, Rooms, Furniture

Mode: Interpersonal

Level: Novice

Students will use online shopping websites to design a room together.

Components of the activity: List of online shopping resources, worksheet

Instructions to the teacher

Put students into pairs and give them a list of websites where they can shop for furniture. Ideally these should be in the target language. Students should work together to agree on which pieces of furniture to buy. Assign each pair a different room in the house. You should determine a budget in the target country’s currency. It would be best to decide on a budget that will force students to compromise and spend wisely. Students should also fill out the table below with information about the items they have chosen as they work using Google Docs. After completing the buying process, you could ask students to present their choices to the class by making a PowerPoint. If you feel your students need more language support for this task, you could include a set of useful phrases and words for their reference.

Instructions to students
You and your partner are now interior designers. Use the list of online shopping resources to find furniture for the new house you are designing. But be careful! You cannot spend more than [X amount of money]. Spend your budget wisely, and create a room you are proud of. You should include the necessary items of furniture for your assigned room and some decorative items, too. As you work, complete the worksheet using Google Docs. Feel free to add more rows to the table.
