LCTL DOORs is housed within the National Less Commonly Taught Languages Resource Center (NLRC) and aims to further build on the work done through the Less Commonly Taught and Indigenous Languages Partnership at Michigan State University.

The NLRC will:

  • expand the database of activities to include the Intermediate level
  • create a sister site with DOORs activities that have already been converted into target languages
  • Create training content for LCTL DOOR materials

Contributors to the LCTL DOORs project include: Graduate Assistants, instructors, and Fulbright FLTAs in the LCTL Program in the Department of Linguistics, Languages, and Cultures (LiLaC) and Graduate Assistants in the LCTL Partnership. Special thanks also go to the Asian Studies Center at Michigan State University for their support of and contributions to the project.

About the LCTL and Indigenous Languages Partnership

The goal of the LCTL and Indigenous Languages Partnership, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, is to create sustainable models for language instruction. We hope to transform the way less commonly taught languages (LCTLs) have been traditionally taught by leveraging cutting edge research and advances in instructional technology so that more students, across more institutions, achieve at least intermediate high proficiency in more LCTLs. LCTL courses have historically faced a variety of economic, logistical, or personnel-related challenges. This project attempts to bring together language specialists in a variety of LCTLs to develop sustainable models for language instruction and is designed to provide the pedagogical flexibility needed to respond effectively to the context of teaching for a given language. The grant is facilitated by the Center for Language Teaching Advancement (CeLTA) at Michigan State University on behalf of the Big Ten Academic Alliance (formerly the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, or CIC).

About the NLRC

The National Less Commonly Taught Languages Resource Center (National LCTL Resource Center; NLRC) is a Department of Education/Title VI-funded national language resource center housed in the Center for Language Teaching Advancement at Michigan State University.

The mission of the NLRC is to support and develop LCTL education by 1) offering high-quality opportunities for professional learning, 2) creating open and innovative instructional resources, and 3) forging strategic collaborations at the inter-institutional level. Eleven projects in these three focus areas will contribute to LCTL teaching and learning.
