Cultural Differences

Topic: Describing People

Mode: Interpersonal

Level: Novice

Students will learn how to describe people based on their physical appearance.

Instructions to the teacher

If necessary, pre-teach the vocabulary and relevant phrases for describing people (e.g., words to describe height, age, body size/type, skin, hair, clothing, etc.).

Find a picture of a “local family” (a family in your culture and in traditional clothing) doing different things (e.g. at home/at a picnic or a park). Share the picture with learners.

Students have to describe each person in writing: e.g., their appearance, approximate age, body type, skin and hair, clothing, what each person is doing, etc. They can also talk about the surroundings of the people in the picture.

When students are done writing, pair them up and let them discuss what they wrote. They can comment on each other’s description and suggest more details for the other person’s description.
