Lottery Tickets

Topic: Numbers

Mode: Interpretive

Level: Novice

Students will practice number comprehension through lottery tickets.

Version 1

Components of this activity: A grid with numbers.

Instruction to the teacher

1. Prepare a number sheet (see the worksheet below) and distribute the worksheet to each student.

2. Ask each student to create a lottery ticket with a 7-digit number. For example:

Lottery Ticket NO.9-2-25-8-4-1-0

(Note: Remind students not to share their ticket No. with their classmates).

3. Ask students to work in pairs: one student says his/her lottery ticket number, then the other student to circle correct numbers on the worksheet.

4. Take turns. Ask students to exchange their lottery tickets to see whether they got the correct answer.

5. Then ask all students to submit their lottery tickets to the instructor. The instructor will pick one ticket randomly to see who is lucky to get a gift (note:instructor can decide what the gift is].

Version 2

Components of this activity: Scripts, a multiple choice exercise with answers in bold, “lottery tickets” (optional)

Instructions to the teacher

Pretend you are the presenter of a television program presenting the winning lottery numbers. You should write an introduction and various catch phrases to use as you present the winning numbers, just like a TV presenter would. The more animated you are, the more engaging and funny this activity will be! Either make a recording of yourself reading the following series of numbers, or read these series of numbers aloud to the class. Students will identify the correct series of numbers on the corresponding multiple choice worksheet.

Alternatively, you could use the numbers on the worksheet below and give each student a “lottery ticket”. The students’ job is to listen carefully and determine whether or not they have a winning ticket as you read out the winning numbers. If you wish, you could have small prizes or candy for those who had winning tickets.
