Geographical Features and Landmarks

  • Post category:Speaking

Topic: Geographical Features

Mode: Interpersonal

Level: Novice

Students will ask each other questions to get information about geographical features and landmarks in the target countries.

Components of the activity: Worksheets, images of geographical features and landmarks in the target country

Instructions to the teacher

This is the basis for an information gap activity. The purpose of an information gap activity is for students to ask their classmates for missing information to fill in the blank spaces on their worksheet. This activity could not be presented  because of its country specific nature. To use this activity, find images of relevant geographical features and landmarks for your target language and culture. Fill in the information below each picture, but make sure that Worksheet A and Worksheet B include different pieces of information. That way, students with Worksheet A will be able to get all the information they need from those with Worksheet B and vice versa. When you do the activity, be sure to separate the students evenly and make it clear who is in which group.

Instructions to students

You will notice that some of the information on your worksheet is filled in and some is blank. Your job is to fill in the blanks in your worksheet by asking your classmates for information about the geographical features and landmarks in the table below. You classmates will also ask you for information. However, you may NOT show your worksheet to your classmate. You have to do this activity orally. If you need the name of an item, you should describe it. For example, “What is the tall white building called?”
