There are three versions of this activity below. In version 1 and 2, students match household items and the rooms they belong in. In version 3, students engage in a role play activity in which students identify which room an item belongs in.

Version 1

Instructions to students

Choose the most logical room in which to keep the following items.

Version 3

Instructions to the teacher: 

  1. Describe the scenario below to students.
  2. Place students into pairs.
  3. Ask one student to play the role of “movers” and ask where to put the furniture; the other student tells the “movers” which room they would prefer the piece of furniture to go.

Instructions to students

Act out a scene where you are a home owner and another student is a mover. Think of a room in your house where you would like your new furniture to go to and answer mover’s questions about it.

Scenario: Movers are bringing in pieces of furniture to your new home, and they need to ask where the furniture goes.

  1. “We have the sofa now. Where would you like us to put it?” 
  2. “We are bringing in the microwave. Where would you like it?” 
  3. “This is the TV. Where would you like it?” 
  4. “This is your washer. What room does it go in?” 
  5. “We have some shower rods and curtains here. Where would you like them?”
