Instructions to the teacher

Either make a recording of the following sentences in advance or read them aloud to the class at a relatively normal pace. Make a multiple choice worksheet like this one. Below, the correct answers appear in bold. 

Script

  1. Hi, how’s it going? I’m trying to get a hold of your roommate and can’t reach him on his phone. Is he home by any chance?
  2. I remember that you are studying with John today. Can I talk to him for a minute?
  3. We’re planning a party on Saturday and were wondering if you’re free to come.
  4. I need to ask a favor. I’m really busy this afternoon and don’t have time to call the car repair shop to ask if my car is done. Could you call them for me?
  5. I’m calling to say I won’t be able to meet for lunch tomorrow after all. I’m sorry about that and am wondering if you have time for lunch on another day.

Instructions to students

Listen to what your friend says on the phone and choose the response you should NOT give.
