Matching Prices

  • Post category:Listening

Topic: Shopping

Mode: Interpretive

Level: Novice

Students will listen to someone talk about the prices of groceries they purchased and then match the items with the correct price.

Components of this activity: Script, recording, matching worksheet

Instructions to the teacher

Either make a recording of the following script in advance or read it aloud to the class at a relatively normal pace. Expand the activity as you see fit and change the foods, prices, and currency to suit your context. The items on the worksheet below are matched with their correct price — mix them up in the new version of the worksheet. Consider including some confounding answers to make the activity more challenging.

Script

Today I bought many foods from the market. I bought 2 kilos of tomatoes for $0.80 and 3 kilos of mushrooms for $0.70. I also got a dozen eggs for only $2.00 and a whole chicken for $5.99. I had very good deals today because I have never bought chicken and eggs at these low prices. For fruits, I bought a durian for $0.50, a kilo of oranges for $0.79, a pineapple for $1.00, and a watermelon for $3.00. I’m very pleased with what I bought today.
