Topic: Function in the Classroom
Mode: Interpretive
Level: Intermediate
Skill: Reading
Students will follow directions to complete a mystery craft.
Components of the activity:
- Instructions to teachers
- Instructions to students
- Mystery craft instruction sheet
Additional materials needed:
- Glue (enough bottles to share amongst students)
- Pencils (one for each student)
- Scissors (one for each student)
- Ruler (optional)
- Old magazines
- string or yard (one large skein)
Instructions to the teacher
Before class: Gather old magazines. You can ask students to bring some in, or you can use the colored advertisement inserts found in newspapers. Ensure that you have enough glue for students to share and that each student has their own pair of scissors. You may modify the instructions to specify where students will find certain supplies (e.g. Go to the front table to get the glue). You could also put certain students in charge of certain supplies so that students have to ask each other to use the glue or scissors, etc. You will need to translate the mystery craft directions into the target language.
Instructions to students
You will be given an instruction sheet for a mystery craft. Your job is to follow the instructions to make the craft. When finished, show your completed craft to your teacher for credit.
Variation:
You may alter this activity and separate the instructions so that some students have the instructions for cutting triangles and some students have the instructions for rolling and gluing them. Students could work in partners to complete the task.
