Instructions to the teacher

Before class, ensure students have access to a secure video discussion application. They may need accounts created and to be instructed on using the application if they haven’t previously used it.

Ask students to create a short video (60-90 seconds) to help new students in which they explain the important procedures for your classroom using the target language. Clarify that procedures are things like whether they should greet the teacher at the door, where to turn in their homework, what to do if they miss class, whether there are bellwork or exit tickets or any other routine assignment to be completed each day, etc. Tell them to choose the things they think are most important for a new student to know to be successful in the class.

Ask students to upload these videos to the video discussion application and clarify expectations for peer interaction. For example, you might ask students to reply with written comments to each other’s videos, or you might ask them to just respond to two of their classmates’ videos with a written or verbal response. A presentational speaking rubric should be provided to students to clarify how the videos and responses will be graded as well.

Instructions to students

You are going to record a brief (60-90 second) video of yourself in which you explain the important procedures for your classroom using the target language. This video is intended as a guide to new students to help them learn how to be successful in your classroom, so it might help to think back to when you were a new student in this classroom. Think about the procedures that you do each day in class that a new student might find confusing, for example, how to greet the teacher, where to turn in homework, etc. Submit your video to the video discussion application and respond to your peers’ posts as directed by your teacher. Be sure to refer to the presentational speaking rubric to make sure you are meeting the expectations for this assignment.
