Topic: Function in the Classroom

Mode: Interpretive

Level: Intermediate

Skill: Listening

Competency: I can follow multiple classroom commands / directions (e.g. ‘Open your book and turn to page 23. Stand up and go to the front of the classroom.’)

Teacher gives verbal clues to students comprise 2+ steps. Students work in pairs to find the correct answer for each prompt, writing their answers on a sheet.

Additional materials needed:

  • A list of 10 clues for students, e.g. ‘Open your textbook to page 45 and write down the 4th word on the page,’ ‘Go to the top floor of the building and find the 2nd door on the right. What does the sign say?’ ‘Walk to my office, open the basket, and grab a blue piece of paper. Write down what it says.’

Instructions to the teacher

Before class prepare a list of 10 clues that will be given verbally to the students in the classroom. The students will work in pairs to follow the instructions and write down the answer on an answer sheet. They will come up to you one pair at a time to receive their instructions. Offer to repeat it a maximum of two times (so that they hear the instructions no more than three times total).

Examples of clues could include:

  • Open your textbook to page 45 and write down the 4th word on the page
  • Go to the top floor of the building and find the 2nd door on the right. What does the sign say?
  • Walk to my office, open the basket, and grab a blue piece of paper. Write down what it says.
  • Look at the yellow sign at the back of the room. What is the last word written on it?

Have the students work in pairs (or small groups) to follow the instructions and write down the correct answer. Once they have answer, have them come back to you to verify whether they have it correct. If correct, give them the next clue. If incorrect, give it to them with the chance to ask for it to be repeated two times.

Instructions to students

In this exercise you will work with a partner to follow verbal clues given by your instructor in a scavenger hunt. Your instructor will give the first clue, and you and your partner need to follow those instructions and write down the answer. An example clue is:

  • Go to the top floor of the building and find the 2nd door on the right. What does the sign say?

Once you have an answer, come and tell me. If you are correct, I will give you the next clue.  If you are incorrect, I will repeat the clue for you to try again.
