My Favorite Recipe

Topic: Food

Mode: Presentational

Level: Novice

Students will present or write about a recipe for the dish of their choosing.

Instructions to the teacher

Give students time to prepare a recipe and set of instructions for a dish. The script from the “Understanding a Recipe” activity can be used to teach the imperative form that the students will need. Print out the script and ask students to underline the verbs in the passage. Ask them how that verb form is different from other forms they know already. Then, briefly present/review how to form the imperative and any other relevant verb forms.

This would be best done as homework. The final product could be presented either verbally to the class or in the form of a written text. In either case, students should use the imperative form or any other form necessary to give directions. Students should write/speak in complete sentences.

To make this task a bit more exciting and elicit more language, use the form of a cooking show or blog post. Ask students to write a short introduction to their recipe introducing the dish (where it comes from, where they learned the recipe, when it is served) and describing what is delicious about it.

Instructions to students

Write a recipe of the dish you like or you are familiar with using the imperative form. You can add some interesting details about it in the introduction (e.g., the origin of the dish and where it is typically served).
