Skill: Writing
Topic: Eat in a Restaurant or Take out
Mode: Presentational
Level: Intermediate
Can-Do/Competency: I can write a positive / negative review about a restaurant that I have recently been to / ordered from detailing service, hospitality, cleanliness, food quality
Excerpt: Students write a review for a restaurant where they have recently eaten.
Instructions to the teacher:
At the beginning, the teacher will brainstorm with students the content of the restaurant review. The teacher can also ask students the following questions:
- Do you read restaurant reviews before you go to a particular restaurant?
- What do you pay attention to while searching for a restaurant to dine in (e.g., food quality, atmosphere, service)?
- Have you ever had the opposite experience of what was written in the reviews?
After this, students will be directed to write a short restaurant review for a place where they have recently eaten. The review can be positive or negative and should include as many details as possible about food, hospitality, service, atmosphere, cleanliness, food quality, and price. As a follow up, students could read either a food critic’s restaurant review or other reviews (Google, Yelp, etc.) to compare how others showcase their experiences. Ask students to discuss the differences in the language (e.g., evaluative language), the depth of the review, and what other people usually/rarely comment on.
Instructions to students:
In this exercise you will write a short restaurant review for a place where you have recently eaten. The review can be positive or negative and should include as many details as possible about food, hospitality, service, atmosphere, cleanliness, food quality, and price. Compare your review with other review(s) from the Internet.
