One will line will shift to the right and students will give a new compliment and response.

Instructions to the teacher

Students will work in pairs to brainstorm situations in which they might give someone a compliment. They will discuss with their partner how they might typically respond to those compliments in their L1. They will then be provided with an explanation of culturally acceptable ways to give and respond to a compliment. Students will line up in 2 lines facing each other. Pairs will give a compliment to the person opposite them and respond to the compliments, then one line will shift to the right and each new set of partners will give a new compliment to each other, responding in a culturally appropriate way

Instructions to students

Today we will work on giving and receiving compliments in a cultural appropriate manner. To begin, you will work with a partner to discuss contexts in which you might give someone a compliment and what an appropriate response to the compliment might be. Next, the class will line up in 2 lines facing each other. Each person will give compliment to the person across from him/her. The other person will respond appropriately. Then, one of the lines will move one person to the right so that new pairs are formed. The process of giving / receiving compliments continues with the same line moving to the right.
