Excerpt: Students write a short newspaper article about a political issue in the TL culture.

Activity components:

A card for each student in the class with a political issue in the TL culture. If there is not a different topic for each student, the same issue can be indicated on multiple cards.

Instructions to the teacher:

Put together a stack of cards (one per student) with a political issue in the TL culture (feel free to double up the political issues if there are not enough issues for each student to have his/her own topic). Each student in the class draws a card and prepares a brief 3-5 paragraph newspaper article about the issue for the next class. The students should look up information about the situation online in either the TL or their own language, but the article should be prepared in the TL and be written following conventions of the journalism in the TL culture.

Instructions to students:

Your teacher will have you draw a card from a stack of cards, which each list a political issue in the TL country. For the next class, prepare a brief 3-5 paragraph newspaper article about the issue. You should look up information about the situation online in either the TL or your own language, but the article should be prepared in the TL. Make sure to follow the conventions of journalism in the TL culture.
